Il Kulan rappresenta una delle 4 sottospecie di Asino selvatico asiatico ancora esistenti. Vive nei territori desertici e semidesertici dell’Asia centrale, dal Turkmenistan al Kazakistan. Evita di solito le zone aperte preferendo le colline ricche di ripari.

Size

Il maschio è leggermente più grande della femmina e può raggiungere i 2,5 m di lunghezza e i 260 kg di peso.

Behavior

Attivo soprattutto all’alba e al tramonto, si muove in branchi e nei suoi spostamenti non si allontana mai più di una ventina di chilometri dalla fonte di abbeveraggio.

Reproduction

Le femmine partoriscono un solo puledro dopo una gestazione di 11 mesi.

Diet

Si nutre in prevalenza di erba ma anche di alberi e arbusti nei periodi di maggiore siccità. Ha bisogno di un regolare accesso all’acqua anche se può resistere 2-4 giorni senza bere in funzione della temperatura ambientale e della quantità di acqua assunta nella dieta.

Threat Level

Oggi è assai raro e la popolazione conta appena 2000 individui maturi. È minacciato dalla perdita dell’habitat, dalla competizione con gli animali domestici e dal bracconaggio per la carne.
