Distribution and Habitat:

Vive nelle praterie e nelle steppe della cordigliera andina fino a circa 5000 m di quota.

Size

Ha un’apertura alare di circa 130 cm e un’altezza di 60 cm.

Behavior

Vive solitario o in coppie sebbene, in presenza di grandi disponibilità di cibo, è possibile osservare gruppi di decine o centinaia di individui.

Reproduction

Nidifica su cornicioni di alti dirupi o su piccoli affioramenti rocciosi, qualche volta su infrastrutture umane. Il nido può essere costituito dal solo substrato oppure da una struttura di rametti intrecciati alta anche 20 cm.

Diet

Si nutre di grandi insetti e altri invertebrati, giovani uccelli, piccoli mammiferi, carogne e rifiuti che ricerca in prossimità degli insediamenti umani e nelle discariche. In presenza di grandi carcasse, lo si osserva insieme agli avvoltoi.
