Nativo della regione sud dell'Himalaya è stato introdotto a scopo venatorio anche in Nuova Zelanda e Sud Africa. Vive su territori montani scoscesi tra i 2500 e i 5000 m di quota.

Size

Il maschio più grande della femmina raggiunge i 90 kg di peso e i 140 cm di lunghezza. Anche le corna, presenti in entrambi i sessi, sono più sviluppate nei maschi che nel periodo riproduttivo esibiscono anche una folta criniera.

Behavior

Attivo soprattutto al mattino e al crepuscolo, trascorre le ore centrali della giornata riposando tra le rocce e la vegetazione dei pascoli più elevati. Vive in mandrie miste fino a 20 individui ad esclusione dei maschi più anziani che tendono ad essere solitari.

Reproduction

Durante il periodo riproduttivo, i maschi difendono piccoli harem di femmine con cui si accoppiano. Ogni femmina, dopo un periodo di gestazione di 7 mesi lascia la mandria per partorire generalmente un solo cucciolo in grado di camminare poco dopo la nascita.

Diet

Erbivoro, si nutre soprattutto di piante erbacee e piccoli cespugli.

Per far fronte al particolare ambiente in cui vive ha sviluppato specifici adattamenti, come la folta e calda pelliccia che lo protegge dai rigori dell'inverno himalaiano e gli zoccoli 'prensili’ che gli assicurano una salda presa sulle rocce.

Threat Level

Le principali minacce sono costituite dalla perdita dell'habitat, dalla competizione con il bestiame domestico e dalla caccia incontrollata.
