Vive nelle foreste tropicali con presenza di corsi d’acqua del Sud America, a est della cordigliera andina.

Size

È il più grande serpente esistente al mondo e raggiunge i 6 m di lunghezza e gli oltre 200 Kg di peso.

Behavior

Notturno e solitario, è particolarmente adattato alla vita acquatica e può stare in immersione anche 10 minuti. Gli occhi e le narici posti verso l’alto, gli permettono di respirare e di vedere mentre nuota.

Reproduction

Il corteggiamento e l’accoppiamento avvengono in acqua. Dopo circa 6 mesi nascono da 20 a 40 piccoli autosufficienti.

Diet

Caccia all’agguato sorprendendo le sue prede intente a bere. Si nutre di rettili, uccelli e mammiferi, anche delle dimensioni di un tapiro, che stringe fra le sue spire fino a soffocarle.

Durante il corteggiamento più maschi, fino a 12, si contendono la stessa femmina ma solo quello dominante riuscirà ad accoppiarsi con lei.

Non è una specie minacciata ma localmente risente della persecuzione diretta da parte dell’uomo e della distruzione dell’habitat.
