Abita le lagune costiere e gli specchi d’acqua salmastra del bacino del Mediterraneo, dell’Africa e dell’Asia meridionale. Dal 1993 la specie ha incominciato a nidificare anche in Italia, e le principali colonie si trovano in Sardegna, in Puglia e nel delta del Po.

Size

Può raggiungere i 4 kg di peso e 1,4 m di altezza.

Behavior

Altamente sociale, vive in colonie composte anche da oltre 10.000 individui.

Reproduction

Ogni coppia, fedele per la vita, utilizza il fango per costruire un nido a cono tronco. I genitori si alternano, per circa un mese, alla cova dell’unico uovo deposto. Ad una settimana dalla schiusa i pulcini della colonia si radunano in gruppi, chiamati “asili”, nei quali resteranno fino all’età di circa tre mesi, quando saranno in grado di volare.

Diet

Si nutre principalmente di piccoli artropodi che filtra attraverso il grande becco ricurvo camminando avanti e indietro sulle lunghissime zampe palmate.

La principale minaccia per questa specie è la drammatica scomparsa delle aree umide.
