Vive nella fitta vegetazione lungo i corsi d’acqua e le paludi dell’America meridionale.

Size

È il più grande roditore esistente, può superare i 60 kg di peso e i 130 cm di lunghezza.

Behavior

Sociale, vive in gruppi di circa 20 individui guidati da un maschio dominante. Sfugge ai predatori tuffandosi in acqua e nuotando velocemente, grazie alle robuste zampe dalle dita palmate e alla possibilità di chiudere ermeticamente le narici che, poste allo stesso livello delle orecchie e degli occhi, permettono di tenere sotto controllo quanto accade fuori dall’acqua.

Reproduction

Dopo una gestazione di 5 mesi nascono circa 4 piccoli, in grado di camminare poco dopo la nascita.

Diet

Erbivoro, si nutre soprattutto di erba e piante acquatiche.

Viene allevato localmente per diversi impieghi: la carne per scopi alimentari, il grasso per scopi farmaceutici mentre i denti sono utilizzati come ornamento dalle popolazioni locali. La pelle, infine, è utilizzata nel campo della pelletteria.

Threat Level

La caccia e la distruzione delle foreste hanno portato al crollo di alcune popolazioni, tuttavia non è considerato in pericolo di estinzione.

RED LIST IUCN: The species is included in the Red List of Threatened Species compiled by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). This is the most comprehensive inventory that codifies the degree of threat to species globally based on a system of categories and scientifically rigorous quantitative criteria.
