The Komodo dragon is one of the oldest living lizards. 

It is currently classified as “vulnerable” in the red list of endangered species, drawn up by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Bioparco houses two specimens. 
The survival of the Komodo dragon is mainly affected by poaching and conflicts with human activities.

The Bioparco supports the Komodo Survival Programme, a non-profit organization, based in Indonesia. Active since 2007, its purpose is to carry out research on the field to increase the knowledge on the species in order to activate a specific management and conservation plan.

Moreover, the organization is committed to the education of the local community.
The latter is encouraged to choose lifestyles focused on greater respect for the environment and involved in the protection of wildlife.

The Bioparco also participates in the European captive breeding programme for the species.
This, together with other international programmes, contributes to guarantee a stock of animals useful for the re-population of any natural areas, should it be necessary.
